How to sell in more than one currency
Use regions in morebasket to price your products in more than one currency, set tax regions, and take payments through your own Stripe or PayPal account.
The morebasket team ·
To sell in more than one currency in morebasket, create a region for each market you serve and give each region its own currency. Add tax regions for the countries and provinces you sell to, and connect your own payment account. Each region carries its own currency and prices, which you can check on your storefront before you sell.
What is a region?
A region is a group of countries that share a currency and the same selling rules. It is the main building block for selling abroad.
For example, you might create:
- A region for the United States, priced in US dollars.
- A region for several European countries that share the euro.
- A region for the United Kingdom, priced in pounds.
Each region has one currency. Countries listed in that region use it. A country belongs in one region at a time, so shoppers do not get two sets of prices.
Regions are part of Payments in morebasket, alongside tax regions and refund reasons.
Do I really need more than one currency?
Not always. Selling in one currency is fine when most of your shoppers live in one country, or when you are happy for others to pay in your currency.
More than one currency helps when:
- Shoppers abroad are put off by prices in a currency they do not use.
- You ship to several countries and want clear, fixed prices there.
- You want to set a different price in one market, for your own reasons.
It adds work too. Each extra region means prices to check, shipping to set up and tax to think about. Start with the market that already sends you most of your visitors.
How do I add a region and its currency?
- Open your admin and go to the regions section in settings.
- Create a region and give it a name shoppers will not see, such as “Europe”.
- Choose the currency for that region.
- Select the countries that belong to it.
- Set up the payment provider for the region (see below).
- Add shipping options that serve those countries.
- Save, then check a product page as a shopper from that region.
Repeat for each market. Changes to regions refresh your storefront, so you do not need to publish again by hand.
How are product prices set in each currency?
Each product variant can hold a price in each currency you sell in. When you add a region with a new currency, you enter a price for that currency on your products.
Some tips:
- Set real prices, not converted ones. Round to a price that looks right in that market, such as a whole number or a familiar ending.
- Check every variant. A variant with a missing price in a currency cannot be bought there.
- Review after changes. If your costs move, update the prices you choose to change.
A spreadsheet helps when you have many products. You can export products, add the new prices and import them again by CSV. See how to sell products with variants for how variants and prices relate.
If you want different prices for different groups of customers, such as wholesale buyers, that is a separate tool called price lists. The plan list puts them on the Pro plan, and the price lists page explains them.
What about tax?
morebasket lets you set up tax regions for countries and provinces. This is where you record the places you sell into and the rates that apply to them.
Be careful here, because the facts are narrow:
- morebasket does not claim to calculate tax automatically for you.
- You are responsible for knowing which taxes apply to your sales.
- If you are unsure, ask an accountant or a tax adviser in each place you sell.
Tax rules vary by country, product and sometimes by your own size, so a general guide cannot decide this for you. Set up the tax regions you have confirmed, and add others as you confirm them.
How do payments work with several currencies?
Storefront payments go through your own account with Stripe or PayPal. Each store connects its own accounts, so money goes to you, and morebasket does not hold it. Fees follow your provider’s rates.
What this means for several currencies:
- Which currencies you can accept depends on your own payment account and where it is based.
- Check your provider’s settings before you launch a region, so checkout does not fail for shoppers.
- Payment methods beyond cards depend on what is switched on in your own provider account. Check there rather than assuming.
- Currency conversion and payout currency are handled by your provider, under their terms.
Our guide to setting up payments walks through connecting Stripe or PayPal, and shows where regions fit in.
What should I do about shipping?
Shipping is where multi-currency selling often goes wrong. A shopper abroad sees your product price, then a shipping cost at checkout.
Set shipping options for each region you add, with prices in that region’s currency. If you use Shippo, rates come through the carrier accounts you have connected in Shippo. morebasket does not claim carrier discounts or label printing. See how to set up shipping for your online store and the Shipping page.
Customs duties and import charges differ by country, and those rules sit outside this guide. Tell shoppers what to expect in your shipping page, in plain words.
Should I translate my store too?
Currency and language are different questions. You can sell in euros without translating anything, and you can translate without adding a currency.
morebasket has a Translations setting that controls which parts of your store content can be translated into which locales. That covers store content, not the admin screens. Read Languages if you plan to do both.
A checklist before you launch a new region
- The region has the right currency and the right countries.
- Every variant has a price in that currency.
- Tax regions are set for the places you are sure about.
- Your payment account accepts the currency.
- Shipping options exist for the region, priced in its currency.
- You placed a test order as a shopper from that region.
- Your policies mention returns and shipping for that market.
Next step
Choose one market that you already ship to and create a single region for it. Enter prices, set shipping, check your payment account, and run one test order. Once it works, you have a pattern to repeat. Plans differ, so see the plan list on the pricing page before you grow.
