How to set up shipping for your online store

Set up stock locations, shipping profiles and shipping options in morebasket, add Shippo rates through your carrier accounts, or fulfil orders by hand.

The morebasket team ·

To set up shipping in morebasket, add your stock locations, group products into shipping profiles, then create shipping options that say how and for how much you deliver. You can offer your own fixed options, or show live rates from the carrier accounts you connect through Shippo. Orders are fulfilled manually.

What do I need before I start?

Shipping touches several parts of your store, so a little preparation saves time.

  • A list of where you ship from and where you ship to.
  • Your products, with an idea of which ones need different handling.
  • A decision on whether you want fixed prices, live carrier rates, or a mix.
  • An account with each carrier you want rates from, if you plan to use Shippo.

Regions matter too. If you sell in more than one country, read how to sell in more than one currency, because shipping options belong to the places you serve.

What are stock locations in shipping?

A stock location is where goods are kept and sent from. Shipping options are tied to locations, so morebasket knows where an order starts its journey.

Add a location for each place you ship from. Name them so you can recognize them on a busy day. If you keep stock in more than one place, our guide to managing stock across more than one location covers how locations work with inventory.

What is a shipping profile?

A shipping profile groups products that ship the same way. It lets you offer different options for different kinds of goods.

Examples:

Profile Products it might hold
Standard parcels Everyday items that fit a regular box
Bulky items Furniture, large frames, long rolls
Fragile goods Glass, ceramics, framed prints
Digital Items with no physical delivery

If all your products ship the same way, a single profile is enough. Add more only when a group of products really needs its own options or prices.

How do I create shipping options?

A shipping option is something the shopper picks at checkout, such as “Standard delivery” or “Collect from the studio”.

  1. Open your admin and go to the shipping settings.
  2. Choose the location the option ships from.
  3. Create an option and give it a name shoppers understand.
  4. Choose the shipping profile it applies to.
  5. Choose the countries it serves, through the region.
  6. Set a price, or choose a live rate (see the next section).
  7. Save, then test it in a checkout.

Option types help you organize the kinds of delivery you offer, for example standard or express. Use plain names with a hint of timing, but only promise a time you control.

Common ways to price:

  • Flat rate: one price for everything. Quick for you and clear for shoppers.
  • By region: a different price for each destination.
  • Free shipping: you absorb the cost, perhaps above a spend you choose.
  • Live rates: shown by Shippo from your carrier accounts.

Free shipping is often a better message than a small discount, as long as the cost is covered in your product prices. Work out the numbers first, then offer it.

How do Shippo rates work?

Shippo is a shipping service that connects to carriers. In morebasket, you connect your Shippo account for your store, and rates are fetched across the carrier accounts that your store has connected in Shippo. Credentials are kept per store.

What that gives you:

  • A shopper can see real carrier prices for their parcel at checkout.
  • You reach carriers through Shippo, using your own carrier accounts.
  • Your credentials stay separate from every other store.

What this guide does not cover:

  • Label printing from the order page, shipping insurance and tracking pages. We make no claim about them here.
  • Special carrier discounts. Your rates depend on your own carrier accounts.

If you want to confirm what a carrier charges, check your Shippo account directly. Read more on the Shipping page.

How does manual fulfilment work?

Manual fulfilment means you decide when an order is ready and you mark it as fulfilled yourself. You pack the parcel, hand it to the carrier through whatever method you use, and update the order.

A routine that works for many small shops:

  1. Check new orders each morning in Orders.
  2. Open an order and confirm the items and the address.
  3. Pack it and attach your label from whichever source you use.
  4. Mark the items as fulfilled in the order.
  5. Keep any tracking details you have for your own records.

Order and fulfilment tasks can also be taken on by the Order agent in the AI workforce. You decide what runs automatically and what needs your approval. The agent works from your live store data and can make mistakes, so keep checking its work, especially at first.

What should I tell shoppers about shipping?

A surprise at the total puts shoppers off. Plain information up front helps.

  • Show where you ship and where you do not.
  • State how long you usually take to pack an order, in words you can keep.
  • Say who pays for return shipping. See how to handle orders, returns and exchanges.
  • Explain what happens with customs or import charges for international parcels.
  • Put the same information on a shipping page and in your product pages’ footer.

Do not promise delivery dates that depend on a carrier. Promise your handling time and let the carrier speak for transit.

How do I test my shipping setup?

Before you tell anyone your store is open:

  1. Add a product to the cart as a shopper in each region you serve.
  2. Check that every address you try shows the right shipping options.
  3. Check the prices against your own calculations.
  4. Try a product from each shipping profile.
  5. Try an address in a country you do not serve, and see what the shopper sees.
  6. Complete one order and fulfil it by hand.

The payments setup guide is a good partner for this test, since a full test touches both.

Which mistakes should I avoid?

  • Pricing shipping below cost. Check a heavy parcel to a far address.
  • Forgetting a profile. A product with no matching option cannot be shipped.
  • Too many options. Two or three clear choices beat a long list.
  • Skipping the test order. Real checkout always teaches you something.
  • Hiding costs. Show shipping early on cart pages, not just at the end.

Next step

Create one stock location, one shipping profile and one flat-rate option for your home market. Place a test order and fulfil it by hand. When that feels routine, add Shippo for live carrier rates, then widen to more regions. The Shipping page lists everything this part of morebasket covers.
