Set up payments with Stripe or PayPal

Connect your own Stripe or PayPal account in morebasket, set regions, currencies and tax regions, test your checkout, and handle refunds with clear reasons.

The morebasket team ·

To set up payments in morebasket, choose Stripe or PayPal, connect your own account, add a region for each place you sell, add your tax regions, and place a test order. Each store connects its own account, so money goes to you, and you pay your provider’s rates.

Which provider should I choose?

morebasket supports two providers: Stripe and PayPal. Pick the one your customers are most likely to trust, or the one you already use. Your storefront checkout can offer both. Some selling tools are Stripe only: memberships, the buy button and checkout for AI shopping agents all take payment through Stripe, so connect Stripe if you plan to use any of them.

Your provider decides who it will pay out to, which countries it supports and which checks it runs. Read its terms before you commit. You can compare what each plan includes on the pricing page.

How do I connect my own account?

Each store connects its own payment account. Nothing is shared between stores. Payments are made to the account you connect, so your provider is where you see balances and payouts.

  1. Open the payment settings in your admin.
  2. Choose Stripe or PayPal.
  3. Sign in to your provider, or create an account there.
  4. Confirm the details your provider asks for, such as your identity and bank account.
  5. Return to your admin and check the provider shows as connected.

That identity step is between you and your provider. It is a normal part of getting paid, and it can take a little time, so start it before you plan to launch. The Payments page lists everything this part of morebasket covers.

How do I set regions and currencies?

A region is a group of countries that share a currency and a way of paying. Add one for each place you sell to.

For example, you might have one region for the United States in dollars and another for the countries that use the euro. Shoppers then see prices in the right currency, and your store knows which payment options apply.

Start small. One home region is enough for a first launch. Add more once your first orders have gone through cleanly. Our guide to selling in more than one currency walks through the decisions, and shipping rates belong to regions too, so plan them together.

How do I add tax regions?

Tax regions record the countries and provinces you sell to, so you can set up the rates that apply to them. morebasket does not calculate tax for you automatically, so decide your rates before you enter them.

Tax rules depend on where you are, what you sell and where your customers live. If you are not sure what applies to you, ask an accountant or your local tax office. Do this before launch, not after the first orders.

A short checklist:

  • List every country or province you will sell to.
  • Find out which of them need you to charge tax.
  • Add a tax region for each one.
  • Check a sample order total against what you expect.

How do I test my checkout?

Test as a customer would. A failed checkout costs you a sale, so this step is worth the time.

  1. Add a product to the cart in your store.
  2. Enter an address in each region you set up.
  3. Choose a shipping option.
  4. Pay using your provider’s test mode, or place a small real order.
  5. Confirm the order appears in your admin and the confirmation reads well.

Check the totals line by line: item price, shipping, tax and currency. If something looks wrong, fix the region, shipping or tax settings and test again. Then switch your provider from test mode to live mode.

If you plan to sell on other pages as well, a buy button takes card payments through Stripe, so connect Stripe and test the button on its own as well.

How do refunds work?

When an order goes wrong, you can refund the payment from the order in your admin. Each refund can carry a reason, and you set the list of reasons yourself in your settings. Typical examples are a damaged item, a wrong size or a change of mind.

Reasons help you later. They show you patterns, such as one product that keeps coming back, so you can fix the listing or the photos. Returns and exchanges sit in the same part of the admin. Our guide to managing orders, returns and exchanges covers the full flow.

How quickly a refund reaches the customer is set by your provider and their bank, not by this page, so read your provider’s refund terms and write a plain line about it in your returns policy so nobody is surprised.

What do payments cost?

Payments go through your own Stripe or PayPal account, so you pay your provider’s rates. Those rates are set by the provider, can differ by country and payment method, and can change. Check the current figures on your provider’s website before you set your prices.

morebasket plans are separate from what your provider charges. See the pricing page for what each plan includes, and our guide to the cost of starting an online store for a way to list every cost in one place.

Which mistakes should I avoid?

  • Launching without a test order. Real checkout always teaches you something.
  • Missing a region. If a country is not in a region, customers there cannot buy.
  • Guessing at tax. Confirm your rates with an accountant first.
  • Leaving the provider in test mode. Test payments do not pay you.
  • Delaying the identity check. Start verification early, because it is out of your hands.
  • No refund reasons. Set them up now so every refund is recorded the same way.
