What is agentic commerce? A plain explainer
Agentic commerce lets AI shopping agents find and buy products for people. Learn how it works, where morebasket stands, and what stays under your control.
The morebasket team ·
Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent finds, compares and buys products on behalf of a person. Instead of a shopper clicking through your store, their assistant reads your catalog and completes checkout. morebasket has checkout for AI shopping agents built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol and Stripe.
What is an AI shopping agent?
An AI shopping agent is software that acts for a buyer. The buyer says what they want: “a waterproof jacket in green, under a budget I set, delivered by Friday.” The agent searches, weighs the options and, if the buyer allows it, places the order.
Compare that with today. A person opens a search engine, visits several stores, reads pages, adds an item to a cart and types in their details. An agent does the same work in the background and brings back a choice or a finished purchase.
How does agentic commerce differ from normal online shopping?
| Normal shopping | Agentic shopping |
|---|---|
| The buyer visits your storefront | The buyer’s agent reads your catalog data |
| The buyer reads your pages and photos | The agent reads product details, options and availability |
| The buyer fills in a checkout form | The agent completes checkout through an agreed protocol |
| Your design persuades | Your data accuracy decides whether you are considered |
The last row is the important one. Agents cannot be charmed by a banner. They rely on clear, accurate, structured product information.
What is the Agentic Commerce Protocol?
A protocol is a shared set of rules so two systems can talk. The Agentic Commerce Protocol is a set of rules that lets AI assistants buy from a store’s catalog and go through checkout.
In morebasket, checkout for AI shopping agents is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, so AI assistants can buy from your catalog. It runs on Stripe, using a Stripe program that needs enrollment. It is not self-serve: if you want it set up for your store, talk to us. You can read more on the agentic commerce page.
To be clear about what we do not say: we do not claim that any particular assistant buys from morebasket stores today, and we cannot tell you how much of your sales it will bring. The point is that a checkout path for agents exists, using your own catalog and your own Stripe account. PayPal is not part of it.
What does it mean for your shop?
Three practical things follow.
1. Your catalog is your storefront for agents. Titles, descriptions, options, availability and prices are what an agent reads. Vague or inconsistent products are harder to choose. See products for how to keep them tidy.
2. Payments still go to you. Each morebasket store connects its own payment accounts. Agent checkout uses Stripe only, so payment goes to your own Stripe account. See payments.
3. Orders are still orders. A purchase by an agent appears in your normal order list, in your store’s default sales channel. You manage payments, fulfilment, returns and refunds in the same place as any other order. See orders.
What stays under your control?
A reasonable worry is that agents will buy things you cannot supply, or that strangers will rewrite your rules. Here is what stays with you.
- What you sell. The agent works from your catalog. If a product is not in it, it cannot be bought.
- Your prices and options. They are the ones you set.
- Your stock. Stock is managed in the same place as for any order.
- Your payment account. Money goes to your own Stripe account.
Because agent checkout needs setup with us, check the agentic commerce page and talk to us before you rely on it.
Should a small shop care now?
It is early, and anyone who gives you a date or a volume is guessing. What does not depend on predictions is that the groundwork helps shoppers today too:
- Accurate titles and descriptions help people and search engines.
- Clear options and availability reduce questions and returns.
- A product feed to Google and Meta keeps your catalog visible in other places. See send your products to Google and Meta.
None of that is a bet on one technology. If agents grow, you are better placed. If they do not, your catalog is still better.
What should you do to prepare?
- Audit your top products. Does each have a clear name, accurate description, correct options and a real price?
- Remove ambiguity. “Large” means little without measurements. Say what you mean.
- Keep stock honest. An agent that buys something you cannot ship creates a support problem like any other.
- Write return and delivery information clearly. Agents and people both look for it.
- Keep payments connected. Make sure your Stripe account is connected and working, since agent checkout runs on Stripe.
- Review your catalog regularly. Out-of-date data is the quickest way to lose trust.
Our guide to getting found in Google and AI assistants goes through this kind of preparation from the visibility side.
Does AI shopping mean you lose the customer relationship?
It can change it. If an assistant makes the choice, the buyer may never see your pages. That makes the things agents cannot see, such as packaging, a good note in the parcel and quick, polite support, a bigger part of why people come back. We do not claim to know how this will settle. Keep your brand clear, and keep the human parts of selling good.
